Ladybug and Cat Noir attend a college named after Françoise Dupont. She is a character from a series of novels created in 1961, a schoolgirl who turns at night into Phantomette — a ghost in a mask. Phantomette became the first superheroine in French literature.

Initially, the project was planned to be made as an anime with a rather dark storyline for teenagers and young adults, but then this idea was abandoned, and the project was made with a younger audience in mind.

According to director and screenwriter Thomas Astruc, since the ladybug symbolizes good luck, he decided to associate it with a black cat, which is a symbol of bad luck.

In the original French dub, the superhero name of Adrien is Black Cat (Chat Noir).
