The character Chef is based on a cafeteria worker at the University of Colorado, where Trey Parker and Matt Stone studied.

Kenny's lines were voiced by actor Matt Stone, covering his mouth with his sleeve or hand.

The comedians Terrance and Phillip were created because Trey Parker and Matt Stone got tired of receiving complaints that the whole project was just "a mix of weak animation and toilet humor."

The character Kenny was based on a person Trey Parker was friends with in elementary school. The real Kenny had a big orange jacket with a hood that covered his face, which made it hard to understand what Kenny was saying. He also often skipped school, which even led to a rumor going around the class that he had died.

The character Towelie (voiced by Vernon Chatman) was created as a mockery of the way marketers release a corresponding toy whenever a new character appears in a storyline. This particular character represents the height of idiocy one can reach by following that logic – releasing an identical toy.

Creating an animated series usually takes 8 to 12 months, so it is practically impossible to reflect current events in such series. In this case, the creators of the series used computer animation, which allowed some episodes to be released fairly quickly, which from time to time led to a noticeable difference between the content of the episode itself and the preceding promotional clips.

South Park still holds the Guinness World Records record in the category of "animated series with the most swearing."
