- Initially the film was planned to be released in November 2017, but the release date was subsequently pushed back a full year to avoid box office competition with another Sony Animation project — Timothy Reckart's film "The Star" (2017).
- In the original, the Grinch steals not the New Year, but Christmas.
- Initially, it was assumed that when voicing the Grinch, Benedict Cumberbatch would speak in his normal voice. The actor managed to convince the creators of the project that since all the other characters speak with an American accent, the Grinch should have the same accent.
