About the film

Act natural.

What it’s about

Mabel, a passionate animal lover, is fighting to save a wild area cherished by her grandmother from a mayor who wants to build a highway through it. Her university professor has developed a way to transfer human consciousness into lifelike robotic animals, allowing people to communicate with real animals. Mabel seizes this chance, hopping into a beaver robot and heading into the forest to persuade the animals to return to her beloved meadow and thwart the mayor's plans.

What hooks you

Daniel Chong directs, with Piper Curda voicing Mabel and Bobby Moynihan as King George. The film's visual distinction between animal and human worlds was inspired by Studio Ghibli's 1994 anime "Pom Poko." A beaver specialist from the University of Minnesota was consulted, and the character voiced by Piper Curda is based on the director's mother, who had a strong sense of duty.

Who it’s for

It is a good pick for those who like animated adventures that mix environmental themes with science fiction, and for viewers who enjoy stories where a determined young person uses clever technology to protect nature. It is also a good pick for those who appreciate family-friendly comedies with quirky animal characters.

Director Daniel Chong
  1. It was originally intended to be a film about human consciousness in a penguin robot. When director and screenwriter Daniel Chong presented the script to Pixar's leadership, in particular to Pete Docter (Docter became one of the producers), the management liked the script. They only suggested replacing the penguins in the concept with something else, stating that there were already too many animated films about penguins. The script was rewritten two more times until it was finally decided that the robot would be a beaver rather than a penguin. In addition, Chong found out that beavers serve as a kind of ecosystem engineers, and decided that a film about a beaver should be a hit.
  2. The last film of Isaiah Whitlock Jr. The film is dedicated to his memory.
  3. One of the characters was based on Meryl Streep (although none of the film's creators expected that she would take on voicing him). According to director and screenwriter Daniel Chong, he finally called her via video link to discuss the matter, and Streep was very favorable to the offer to work on the project.
  4. As a consultant, the filmmakers brought in a beaver specialist from the University of Minnesota. She was first contacted in 2021.
  5. The character voiced by Piper Curda was inspired by the mother of director and screenwriter Daniel Chong, who, according to him, had a very strong sense of duty.
  6. According to director and screenwriter Daniel Chong, he once came across an article about Yellowstone National Park, where wolves were being reintroduced to life in the wild, and whose ecosystem included beavers.
