About the film

Love will drive you mad.

What it’s about

In 1970s Detroit, autoworker John Miller falls for Sophia, the girlfriend of local crime boss Reynolds. Their relationship angers Reynolds, who has Miller framed by corrupt police. Sentenced to 25 years for a crime he did not commit, Miller escapes with help from former army buddies. Now free, he has one goal: revenge against the man who took his love, his freedom, and his old life.

What hooks you

Albert Hughes and Potsy Ponciroli direct Alan Ritchson as Miller, with Shailene Woodley as Sophia and Ben Foster as Reynolds. The film uses almost no dialogue, relying on performance, music, and cinematography to tell the story. The soundtrack features hits by Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie. Ritchson wore a dental prosthetic and wigs to show the passage of time.

Who it’s for

It is a good pick for those who like action-driven revenge stories with a gritty 1970s setting, and for viewers who appreciate visual storytelling with minimal dialogue.

Trivia

  1. The film has no dialogue except for a couple of short phrases.
  2. Initially, director Potzi Ponciroli intended to make the film with almost no dialogue and to focus, accordingly, not on the characters' speech but on the expressiveness of the acting, the musical accompaniment, and the cinematography. According to producer Greg Silverman, the goal was to create a self-sufficient visual sequence that would allow viewers in any country in the world, regardless of language and culture, to understand and feel the twists and turns of the plot.
  3. Alan Ritchson (he played the main character, auto plant worker John Miller) was given a special dental prosthesis that somewhat altered the shape of the actor's face. Several wigs were also created, and the main character's wearing of them symbolized the passage of time and changes in his mood and emotional state. Ritchson wanted to take the wigs home after filming ended, but he was not allowed to.
