What it’s about

Micha Hartung runs a failing video rental shop. An ambitious journalist presents him with evidence that, years earlier, while working for the Reichsbahn, Micha supposedly organized the largest mass escape from East Germany. Tempted by a generous fee, Micha confirms the story even though it is only partly true. Overnight he becomes a national hero, celebrated in interviews, talk shows, and even the Bundestag. As his fame grows, so does the fear of exposure, and Micha keeps lying to hold on to public admiration and, above all, the love and respect of those closest to him.

Charly Hübner and Christiane Paul lead the cast. Directed by Wolfgang Becker and Achim von Borries, the film draws on a novel and features a story of escape and a video store.
