In 1987 Harlem, sixteen-year-old Claireece "Precious" Jones is pregnant by her absent father for the second time. At home she endures her mother's emotional and physical abuse. Though she has reached ninth grade with good marks, she cannot read. Offered a place at an alternative school, she sees a chance to change her life.
