About the film
Why did women talk about Dorian Gray in whispers?
What it’s about
Dorian Gray, a charming and innocent young man, sees a magnificent portrait of himself while with the cynical Harry Wotton. Overwhelmed by his own beauty, he vows to give his soul to stay forever young. The wish works: he remains youthful while the painting bears the marks of his sins, becoming disfigured. For decades, as a pupil of Harry, he watches coldly while his cruelty ruins everyone who loves him.
What hooks you
Albert Lewin directs George Sanders as Lord Henry Wotton and Hurd Hatfield as Dorian Gray. The film won an Oscar for Harry Stradling Sr.'s black-and-white cinematography and a Golden Globe for Angela Lansbury's supporting role as Sibyl Vane.
