About the film
There was no crime in Star City, Arkansas. No murder. And no fear. Until now.
What it’s about
In Los Angeles, a drug deal turns into a multiple murder. Three criminals—Fantasia, Ray Malcolm, and Pluto—flee with the loot, heading for Houston. Along the way, they decide to hide out in a small Arkansas town. Two LAPD detectives alert the local sheriff, Dale Dixon, that the fugitives are in his area.
What hooks you
The film won an MTV Movie Award for Carl Franklin as best new director. The cast includes Bill Paxton as Chief Dale Dixon, Cynda Williams as Fantasia, and Billy Bob Thornton as Ray Malcolm, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Originally planned for direct-to-video, it was given a theatrical release after all.
Who it’s for
It is worth a look for anyone who enjoys crime dramas where small-town calm is shattered by big-city violence, and for those who like seeing an underestimated local lawman match wits with dangerous fugitives.

All 9Trivia
- The film was initially planned for a direct-to-video release, but the distributor I.R.S. Records nevertheless decided to release it in theaters, where it flopped.
- Cinda Williams got the role of Lyla Walker by tricking director Carl Franklin, telling him she wanted to interview him and inviting herself to lunch with him at a restaurant. At the table she began acting out one of the scenes, which also took place in a restaurant, and even swearing loudly the way her character did. Franklin did not like being deceived, but he gave Williams the role anyway.
