Jamie Lee Curtis (who played Tess Coleman) personally contacted Disney executives and proposed making a sequel to the film. She also convinced Lindsay Lohan, with whom she became friends on the set of the 2003 film, to star in the sequel.

Jodie Foster was offered to appear on screen again as the character she had already played in Gary Nelson's comedy Freaky Friday (1976), but she turned out to be busy filming Rebecca Zlotowski's A Private Life (2025).

Costume designer Natalie O'Brien tracked down the silk dress Jamie Lee Curtis wore in the previous film on the online auction site eBay; it was purchased and refitted to the actress's figure.
