About the film

You can erase someone from your mind. Getting them out of your heart is another story.

What it’s about

Joel Barish is heartbroken to learn that his ex-girlfriend Clementine has undergone a medical procedure to erase him from her memory. In response, he decides to do the same. As the process begins, he watches his memories of her fade away one by one and realizes he still loves her, but it may be too late to stop the erasure.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet play the central couple, with Winslet receiving Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for her performance. The title comes from Alexander Pope's poem "Eloisa to Abelard".

Who it’s for

Screenplay Michel Gondry
  1. The film's title is borrowed from Alexander Pope's poem "Eloisa to Abelard" (1714). Charlie Kaufman also used this same poem when creating the earlier project "Being John Malkovich" (1999).
  2. Nicolas Cage showed considerable interest in the role of Joel, but in the end it went to Jim Carrey.
  3. The company specializing in memory erasure is called "Lacuna Inc." The word Lacuna has Latin origins and means a gap or omission. It is also worth noting that the term "lacunar infarct" refers to an infarct in which a small part of the brain becomes responsible for performing a specific function (in particular, memory).
  4. The idea for the plot came to Michel Gondry after a conversation with the artist Pierre Bismuth, who suggested the following: Early in the morning you open your mailbox and receive the following message: "The one you knew has just erased you from their memory..."
  5. All the scenes in the train were shot in real existing carriages of a moving train. It was decided not to resort to sets.
  6. The opening credits do not begin until the 18th minute of the film.
