Stories from the set

According to Brendan Fraser (who played Phillip), during filming he rented a porcupine, and soon faced the question: what if he grew attached to an animal that would ultimately have to be returned to its owner? Fraser stated that this situation (temporary ownership, surrogate attachment, and the inevitability of separation) constitutes the essence of the ethical and moral dilemma at the center of the narrative.
