About the film

One man's fight to survive.

What it’s about

In the Ardennes offensive, American officer Castle is wounded and becomes the sole survivor of his unit. Stranded behind German lines, he has only a military radio transmitter and must evade capture while trying to reach his own forces.

What hooks you

Scott Eastwood plays Castle, having initially hesitated to take on another war drama until he read the script. The production sought out authentic World War II weapons and vehicles across Europe, including German half-tracks and tanks, a process producer Marc Frydman described as a "logistical achievement." Military consultant Jarico Denman studied period engineering, weapons, explosives, and tactics, drawing on archival footage, photographs, and firsthand accounts, and reconsidered his own combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. Designer Eric Carlson constructed 360-degree sets to allow continuous shots with meticulous detail.

Who it’s for

It suits viewers who like survival stories set in real historical battles, where a lone soldier relies on cunning and limited gear. It will appeal to those drawn to war dramas with authentic period detail and tactical realism.

Trivia

  1. For authenticity, military consultant Jariko Denman specifically studied World War II-era engineering, weapons of the corresponding era, explosives, tactics, and methods of preparing for combat operations. He worked with mid-20th-century training films, archival footage, photographs, and accounts from participants and eyewitnesses. Among other things, with these materials in mind, Denman rethought his own extensive experience in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  2. Specifically for the filming, authentic World War II-era weapons and equipment were sought out across Europe, including German half-track armored personnel carriers and tanks. According to producer Mark Friedman, getting them to the set became a "logistical feat."
  3. Before beginning work on this project, screenwriters Mark Friedman (who also served as producer) and Rod Lurie (screenwriter and director) spent several years independently studying the European theater of World War II.
  4. Scott Eastwood, who had already appeared in several war dramas, initially did not want to act in another one, but he read the script and changed his mind.
  5. At the suggestion of production designer Eric Carlson, circular sets were built – 360 degrees – for filming in continuous takes. The sets were very precise, taking into account the smallest details.
