About the film

In the hours before D-Day, one decision changed the world.

What it’s about

June 1944. The Normandy invasion is ready, but any delay risks German intelligence uncovering the Allied plans. James Stagg, Britain's chief meteorologist, must persuade General Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Allied command to trust his unorthodox methods and alter the operation's timetable. With only 72 hours to predict two approaching storms, the fate of the Western Front hangs on his forecast.

What hooks you

Andrew Scott plays James Stagg, and Brendan Fraser plays Dwight D. Eisenhower. The production used vintage printing presses to replicate wartime maps and documents, and trained cast and crew with meteorologists of similar age to operate century-old equipment. One editor, working with archival footage, was the grandson of the real James Stagg.

Who it’s for

It suits viewers who like historical dramas where high-stakes decisions turn on technical detail and personal conviction. It will appeal to those drawn to World War II stories told through the pressure of command, and to anyone interested in how science and personality collide at critical moments.

Screenplay Anthony Maras
  1. The actors and technical staff were trained to work with equipment created a century ago by meteorologists who were almost the same age. The film used exact copies of the weather maps that were used in planning the Normandy landings.
  2. In order to convey in the smallest detail the appearance of wartime maps and documents, the filmmakers specially selected vintage printing presses and other equipment.
  3. The filmmakers recreated the exact topography of the beaches based on postcards and photographs of the area provided by residents of the United Kingdom, who did not even suspect what their family archives were needed for.
  4. The film included newsreel footage that Anthony Maras, the director and screenwriter, initially did not intend to use. He did not want the picture to look like a historical documentary. Recalling Peter Jackson's documentary project They Shall Not Grow Old (2018), Maras colorized the archival footage. When selecting material in the archives, Maras and his assistants viewed 46 hours of wartime newsreel footage.
  5. While scouting locations for the Allied forces headquarters, Anthony Maras considered over 100 options. At one point he even thought about using the very estate in Hampshire where the command was stationed during World War II, but it turned out that a military base is still located there. In the end, the filmmakers settled on the Rothschild country estate in Buckinghamshire.
  6. While working on the film, the cinematographer, costume designer, and production designer drew on the color palette of hand-tinted frames from wartime newsreels.
