About the film
What it’s about
In the Pskov region, the village of Kurakino endures German occupation. Matvey Kuzmin, an elderly man seen by neighbors as a sullen loner, keeps to himself even as repressions intensify. After executions and accusations of betrayal, the occupiers order him to lead a mountain troopers' detachment into the Soviet rear. He accepts, demanding a horse as payment, ostensibly to save his family. Through his grandson Vaska, he secretly passes word of the enemy's route to Soviet troops. All night he guides the Germans through snowstorms and trackless forest, while they remain unaware of his true intention.
What hooks you
Fyodor Dobronravov plays Kuzmich, chosen for the role without an audition because of his resemblance to the historical Matvey Kuzmin. The production recreated a 1940s village in an abandoned settlement, building houses, fences, gardens, and even beehives; costumes were repeatedly washed and treated to remove modern dyes. The filmmakers worked with archives, consultants, and an eyewitness to ensure historical accuracy.
Who it’s for
It is a good pick for those who like war stories grounded in real history, where moral choices carry heavy weight and tension builds through snowbound landscapes.

- The filming took place in the Pskov region.
- All scenes were shot on location or in specially built village houses. The filmmakers also laid a road, set up vegetable gardens, brought in domestic animals, and even installed a beehive.
- To preserve historical accuracy, the filmmakers worked with archives, brought in consultants, and found a witness to the events — a local grandmother who lived in a nursing home.
- During the summer filming, the filmmakers battled blooming lupines, trying to keep them out of frame: this fodder crop only appeared in the 1950s.
- To recreate the rural life of the 1940s and collect authentic props of those years, the decorators turned to private collectors, employees of the Velikiye Luki Drama Theater, and local residents.
- Fyodor Dobronravov was chosen for the main role without an audition. Producer and creator Marina Selivanova chose Fyodor from a photograph due to his physical resemblance to Matvey Kuzmin before work on the script began.
