J.J. Abrams named the planet Kijimi after a Japanese synthesizer.

Originally, Colin Trevorrow was set to direct the film, but due to creative differences with the studio he stepped down as director, remaining as a screenwriter, and was replaced by J.J. Abrams, who had already worked with LucasFilm on the seventh episode of the saga — «Star Wars: The Force Awakens».

The working title of Episode IX is Black Diamond.

The film uses footage featuring Carrie Fisher that was shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

On November 25, 2019, news emerged that the film's script had appeared online. Someone from the cast (later John Boyega admitted it was him) allegedly left the script under the bed when moving to another room. During cleaning, the script was found and someone tried to sell it on eBay. Director J.J. Abrams confirmed that Disney and Lucasfilm bought it.

Along with a cameo appearance as a hologram in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, Palpatine is the most famous villain of the Star Wars universe, having appeared on screen six times.

Anthony Daniels, the performer of the role of C-3PO, is the only one who has played in all 9 official films of the Star Wars franchise (not to mention numerous spin-offs). He began with an appearance in the very first film, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (George Lucas, 1977).

The performer of the role of Kylo, British actor Dominic Monaghan, got into the film's cast thanks to a bet he won against his friend and director J.J. Abrams. Abrams, who was one of the screenwriters, wrote this role specifically for Monaghan.

For the filming of the corresponding quicksand scenes in the Jordanian desert, 30 tons of black beans were brought in.
