About the film
This is not a ghost story.
What it’s about
Mother Mary, an iconic pop star, prepares to return to the stage after a decade away. Unhappy with the dress made for her concert, she arrives unannounced at the studio of Sam Anselm, her former best friend and now a successful fashion designer, to ask her to make the outfit. The two women have a painful past to confront.
What hooks you
David Lowery directs Anne Hathaway as Mother Mary and Michaela Coel as Sam Anselm. The cast also includes Hunter Schafer, FKA twigs, Atheena Frizzell, and Sian Clifford. The film blends horror and music, with a supernatural element: the Red Woman, a ghostly red figure, was achieved without CGI, using air flows and light fabrics. Production designer Francesca Balestra Di Mottola designed the loft where Sam works, adding color and lighting to an initially monochrome set.
Who it’s for
It suits viewers who enjoy tension that builds slowly and stories about old grudges and betrayal. Those who like psychosexual undertones and absurd, puzzling atmospheres will find much to appreciate.

All 11Trivia
- In the script, the Red Woman is described simply as a "ghostly red image." On screen, she was shown without the use of computer graphics. The filmmakers were helped by Daniel Wurtzel from Brooklyn, known for his installations using air currents and lightweight fabrics.
- The film's production designer, Francesca Balestra Di Mottola, herself designed the flooring and the loft where Mikaela Cole's character conceived the images of her future creations. Initially everything was monochrome, and color and lighting were added later.
- While preparing for the shoot, Anne Hathaway took dance lessons herself, visited dance studios and concert performances by dancers, and also reviewed relevant video recordings.
- In the role of Imogen, British singer FKA Twigs (real name Tahliah Debrett Barnett) imitated a street dance style called "krumping" and trained with the UK dance collective Wet Wipes.
- At first, director and screenwriter David Lowery intended to make the film with only two main characters, but over time this idea had to be abandoned.
