The filming of Project X took place over 25 nights from five in the evening to five in the morning at the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California, where the suburban house sets were located. By the end of the film, almost all of them had been destroyed.

The film became the most downloaded from torrent trackers in 2012.

"Project X" was the working title of the film, but it leaked onto the Internet and caused a wave of rumors; in the end, the producers decided to keep this title.

Many of the characters' names match the names of the actors playing those characters.

The plot of the film is based on a real incident that became known worldwide. It happened in Melbourne in 2008. At that time, a 16-year-old teenager, Corey Worthington, threw a party while his parents were away, which gathered 500 people. The teenager sent out invitations using a social media page. The evening ended with mass riots, the arrival of police with dogs, and even a military helicopter being called in.
