About the film

Lucky is the one who dies quickly...

What it’s about

A National Guard training unit is tasked with delivering supplies to a scientific outpost in the New Mexico desert. They arrive to find the station deserted and pick up a weak distress call from a distant ridge. Sergeant Jeffrey Millstone leads a rescue mission into the hills, unaware that the area is home to a clan of cannibalistic mutants.

What hooks you

Wes Craven co-wrote the screenplay and conceived the sequel's premise, originally planning to bring back Brenda from the first film before recasting the lead. The actors playing the trainees learned rock climbing for the role, and Derek Mears endured four hours of makeup each morning as the Chameleon.

Who it’s for

It suits viewers who like horror that pits unprepared soldiers against monstrous foes in a harsh desert setting, and who enjoy relentless survival scenarios with a high body count.

Trivia

  1. The idea for the film came to Wes Craven (who participated in this project as one of the screenwriters) during a conversation with producer Peter Locke. He imagined that after everything that happened to her, the heroine of the previous film, Brenda (played by Emilie de Ravin), joins the National Guard to overcome her own fears. Brenda has just finished her training course, and her sergeant announces that the group is being sent back to the New Mexico desert to finish off the surviving mutants. Only Brenda knows the location of the mutants, which is why the sergeant and the group need her. The actress was busy filming the series "Lost" (2004-2010), so she could not take part in the sequel. Therefore, Craven replaced her heroine, but kept most of the concept, including the training course for National Guard servicemen.
  2. The actors playing National Guard servicemen undergoing a training course had to master some rock climbing skills.
  3. Derek Mears, who plays the Chameleon, had his makeup applied for 4 hours every morning.
