Police captain Jeff is wounded during a drug bust that goes wrong and ends up in a coma. When he wakes, he discovers he can understand the language of animals and hear their thoughts. He keeps this ability secret, fearing he will be seen as insane, but uses it to solve crimes and to try to repair his relationship with his daughter Stella, with whom he has struggled because of his constant work.
