Biography
American actor and film director. Anthony Perkins was the son of the famous Broadway actor Osgood Perkins. He graduated from Rollins College and Columbia University. In 1956 and 1957, Anthony Perkins was nominated for an Academy Award — the first time for William Wyler's film "Friendly Persuasion," which won the Palme d'Or. He appeared in several films with Sophia Loren ("Desire Under the Elms" and others), worked with Orson Welles on the adaptation of Kafka's novel "The Trial," and in 1961 was awarded the Cannes Film Festival prize for his role in "Goodbye Again." He was considered one of the most promising Hollywood stars of the late 1950s.
He gained worldwide and, at the same time, fatal fame after his role in Hitchcock's 1960 film "Psycho." Subsequently, directors saw the actor only as mentally unbalanced characters. He never hid his bisexuality, and died of pneumonia, according to some rumors brought on by AIDS, at the age of 60. His widow, Berry Berenson, died tragically on September 11, 2001, on one of the planes that crashed into the Twin Towers in New York.
