When he turned 5, Pepper's family set sail on a private ship called the "Moon Firefly." Over 5 years of sailing, the family visited many islands in the southern Pacific Ocean, including Fiji and Tahiti. The children received their education through correspondence and by attending island schools. Since there was no television on the ship, the sailors' entire leisure time consisted of games and home performances. When Pepper turned ten, the ship returned to his hometown.
