Charlotte Rampling

British actress, Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), holder of numerous international and national awards. Oscar nominee.

After being educated in schools in France and England, Charlotte Rampling began her career as a model. Leaving the modeling business, Rampling studied at the London acting school "Royal Court". Rampling's first film role was a cameo as a water skier in Richard Lester's 1965 comedy "The Knack". A year later, Rampling received a more serious role in the comedy "Georgy Girl" with Lynn Redgrave. This role made her popular in the UK and brought new role offers.

However, in her homeland in the 1960s, Rampling mostly appeared in light comedies. In search of more interesting work, Charlotte Rampling turned her attention to Italian cinema and soon received a role in Luchino Visconti's 1969 political drama "The Damned". Until the mid-1970s, Rampling was busy in Italian cinema; among her roles was the lead in Liliana Cavani's film "The Night Porter", which tells of a sadomasochistic relationship between a former concentration camp guard (played by Dirk Bogarde) and a camp prisoner. The film was banned in Italy and sparked debate among European and American film critics.
