Biography
Herlina Christine Natalia Hakim (born December 25, 1956 in Kuala Tungkal, Jambi) is an Indonesian actress, film producer, and activist. Christine is of mixed heritage, with family roots in Aceh, Minang, Java, and the Middle East.
Christine Hakim was born in Jambi and grew up in Yogyakarta, originally dreaming of becoming an architect or psychologist. Her career path changed when director Teguh Karya noticed her for his 1973 film "First Love" (Cinta Pertama). Her role in that film earned her the Citra Award for Best Actress and convinced her to pursue an acting career. Since then she has appeared in numerous films, including "The Storm Will Surely Pass" (Badai Pasti Berlalu) in 1977 and "Tjoet Nja' Dhien" in 1988. She also played a small role in the 2010 Hollywood film "Eat, Pray, Love." As of 2018 she has received eight Citra Awards, was honored with lifetime achievement awards from the Indonesian Film Festival, the Indonesian Movie Actors Awards, and the International Film Festival in Cinemanila, and was also a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002.
Christine expanded her career into film production in 1998, producing the films "Leaf on a Pillow" (Daun di Atas Bantal) and "Whispering Sands" (Pasir Berbisik). Later she turned to documentary film and became an advocate for education and autism awareness. Since 2008 she has been Indonesia's ambassador to UNESCO, focusing on education issues.
Christine initially did not intend to become an actress. She dreamed of becoming an architect or psychologist. However, her fate changed when Teguh Karya offered her a role in "First Love." He approached her after seeing her modeling photos in a magazine, which she had done only to help a friend. Unable to resist Karya's warm and friendly charm, Christine described how he "slowly reeled her in, like a fisherman." Despite initially considering leaving acting after filming ended, her work in "First Love" earned her the Citra Award for Best Actress, convincing her to continue her acting career.
