Biography

George Anthony Devolder Santos (born July 22, 1988) is an American politician who has been the U.S. Representative for New York's 3rd congressional district since 2023. A member of the Republican Party, Santos was elected to Congress in 2022 after an unsuccessful 2020 bid against incumbent Congressman Thomas Suozzi. Santos is the first openly LGBT person elected to Congress as a Republican.

Santos has made numerous false or dubious claims about his biography, work history, criminal record, financial situation, ethnicity, religion, and other matters — both publicly and privately. Six weeks after his election, numerous news outlets reported that a significant portion of his self-published biography appeared to be fabricated, including claims about his ancestry, education, employment, charitable work, real estate ownership, and crimes of which he claimed to be a victim. Santos admitted that he had lied about his education and employment.

In 2010, Santos confessed to committing check fraud in Brazil in 2008 but failed to appear in court in 2011, leaving the case unresolved. After his election, Brazilian authorities reopened the case in late 2022. On March 24, 2023, it was announced that Santos would plead guilty in that case. In addition, several court judgments were issued against Santos in the U.S. in cases involving eviction and personal debts. In 2022, he was accused of failing to pay thousands of dollars under court judgments from the 2010s, which he acknowledged. In 2017, Santos was charged in the U.S. with theft by deception in connection with invalid checks to dog breeders, but the charges were dropped and the record expunged in 2021 after the signatures on the checks did not match his signature.
