Jack was born into an acting family to Maria Aitken and Nigel Davenport; his parents divorced when he was seven. On his father's side, he has an older half-sister, actress Laura Davenport, and a brother, Hugo Davenport. His maternal great-grandfather was British politician and diplomat John Maffey, 1st Baron Rugby; his maternal grandmother was socialite Lady Penelope Aitken; his maternal grandfather was British politician Sir William Aitken; and his maternal uncle is British politician Jonathan Aitken.

In 2010, Jack and his wife, actress Michelle Gomez, had a son, Harry Davenport.

He attended the Dragon School, a preparatory boarding school in Oxford (Oxfordshire); Cheltenham College, an independent boarding school in Cheltenham (Gloucestershire); the University of East Anglia in Norwich, where he studied English literature and film studies; and the British American Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where he studied acting.
