Biography

Jonathan Rhys Meyers (born 27 July 1977) is an Irish actor and model. He is best known for his roles in the films Velvet Goldmine, Bend It Like Beckham, Woody Allen's Match Point and his television role as Elvis Presley in the biographical mini-series Elvis, which earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor. In two of his films, Velvet Goldmine and August Rush, he also took over singing parts.

Jonathan's parents separated when he was 3 years old. He and his brother Alan stayed with their mother, while his two other brothers went to live with their father in their grandmother's house.

His real name is Jonathan Michael Francis O'Keeffe. Myers is his mother's maiden name, O'Keeffe is his father's. The "Rhys" part was added by the actor later.

At 16 he was expelled from school. After that he went to an audition, where he got his first role.

On June 28, 2011, he was hospitalized after attempting suicide. The actor took a lethal dose of pills while at his home in London, and was found unconscious by his neighbors. Doctors managed to save him.
