Biography

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Julio Medem (born 21 October 1958) is a Spanish screenwriter and film director. Medem was born in San Sebastián, Basque Country, and was interested in cinema from childhood: he would take his father's Super 8 camera and shoot at night while no one was paying attention. After graduating from university (where he earned degrees in medicine and general surgery), he worked as a film critic, and later as a screenwriter, assistant director and editor. After several short films, he made his first feature film, Cows (Vacas), for which he won the Goya Award. After that film, he made The Red Squirrel and Earth, both of which received good reviews at Cannes. In his next film, Lovers of the Arctic Circle, which was compared to the works of Krzysztof Kieślowski, he explored circular narrative and a tendency toward minimalist textures, which he then overcame in his next film, Sex and Lucia, where the plot dissolves into very lyrical eroticism. After that film, he moved away from his style to shoot and produce Basque Ball (La pelota vasca), a documentary about the political problems of the Basque Country that caused an uproar among Spain's right-wing politicians. After that, in 2007, his film Chaotic Ana premiered.
