American film actor with the appearance of a seasoned man who had seen it all in his life.

Like all actors with a tough look, he began his film career with gangsters and adventurers of all kinds. Gradually he moved to heroic roles and then became a star. Marvin, a World War II veteran, took up acting in the late 1940s. He first appeared on summer stages and in off-Broadway productions.

In 1951, he made his Broadway debut. That same year, he entered film with a small role in "You're in the Navy Now," and two years later gained recognition as a psychopathic gang leader who poured hot coffee in his girlfriend's face in "The Big Heat."

During World War II, Lee Marvin left school and joined the 4th U.S. Marine Division, where he served as a sniper. In 1944, he was wounded in the Battle of Saipan, eight months before the Battle of Iwo Jima. Most of the soldiers in his platoon died. That battle left a lasting mark on his life. Lee Marvin received the Purple Heart and was medically discharged with the rank of private first class.
