His father worked as a literature professor, and his mother was a choreographer. He studied at the School of Theater Arts. He works as an actor, director, and producer. He has been married 5 times: to actress Patricia Arquette, to singer Lisa Marie Presley, to waitress Alice Kim (son Kal-El was born), to makeup artist Erika Koike, and since 2021 to artist Riko Shibata (daughter August was born). He was in a relationship with actress Christina Fulton (son Weston was born)
