Salim was born into an Algerian family in Lyon and grew up in Vaulx-en-Velin, a suburb of Lyon.

From the age of fourteen, Salim began practicing boxing; in 1998 he became French kickboxing champion, and in 1999 and 2002 he was runner-up in the French Muay Thai championship.

In 2002, Salim graduated from the La Scène sur Saône drama school in Lyon.
