Suraj Sharma is an Indian actor from New Delhi who made his debut in the lead role in the 2012 film Life of Pi. Suraj Sharma was born in New Delhi, India. His parents are Malayali, originally from Kerala. Suraj studies philosophy at St. Stephen's College in New Delhi. He graduated from Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, where he was described as a popular student. Before this role he had no acting experience, and he went to the audition only because he was there with his younger brother Shriharsh Sharma, who asked him to go along with him. He was one of 3,000 actors who auditioned for the role of Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi). Sharma went through several rounds of auditions before getting the role.

Director Ang Lee stated that he chose Sharma primarily because of his expressive eyes and innocent appearance. According to him, Sharma had not only the emotion but also the "look" of Pi. His "medium complexion" and "medium build" were deemed ideal for the role. After filming Life of Pi, Sharma returned to studying philosophy at St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, and intends to continue working in cinema in one capacity or another.[6] The film received critical acclaim and positive reviews for Sharma's performance.
