Biography

Michele Rech (Italian: [miˈkɛːle ˈrɛk]; born 12 December 1983), known as Zerocalcare ([ˌdzɛrokalˈkaːre]), is an Italian cartoonist. His pseudonym, meaning "zero limescale", is based on an advertising jingle for a limescale remover that came to mind when he needed to quickly come up with an internet nickname.

Rech was born in Cortona, Tuscany, Italy, to an Italian father from Rome and a French mother. He grew up in France and then in Rome (Rebibbia-Ponte Mammolo area), where he graduated from the Lycée Chateaubriand. In 2003, at the age of 20, he began working as an illustrator for several newspapers. At the same time he worked on a webcomic for Zuda Comics, the online division of DC Comics. In 2004 he created a comic about the protests at the 2001 G8 summit, in which he took part.

In October 2011 he published his first graphic novel, "The Armadillo Prophecy", and in November he created the website zerocalcare.it, where he published autobiographical comics. In September 2012 the blog received the Macchianera award as "Best Cartoonist" and the Gran Guinigi award at Lucca Comics for best short story with "The Armadillo Prophecy".

In April 2016 his fourth graphic novel, "Kobane Calling: Greetings from Northern Syria", was released. The work had previously been published in "Internazionale" and was dedicated to the conflict between the Kurds and the Islamic State. "Kobane Calling" received the Micheluzzi award as best comic at Naples Comicon in 2017. That same year he was invited to San Diego Comic-Con in connection with the English edition of "Kobane Calling", but he received his US visa at the last moment due to trips to Rojava.
