This series was originally intended to be titled "Sex Crimes" and to be independent of the series "Law & Order" (1990-2010). At NBC, however, they decided that the title would be too harsh. After negotiations with the creator of "Law & Order," Dick Wolf, it was decided to make this series part of that one.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, NBC ordered that the opening title sequence for the 2001-2002 season be changed and that footage of the Twin Towers be removed from it.

Until the 4th episode of the 12th season, scenes at the police station were filmed in North Bergen, New Jersey. After that, work on the series continued at a studio near the piers in Manhattan, where the original series "Law & Order" had previously been filmed.

Many main cast members of the Law & Order universe first appeared in the series as guest stars. Sonny Carisi's actor, Peter Scanavino, was the only one from the original series to appear as a guest actor in 4 of the 6 series before joining the main cast.
