    After a luxurious vacation in Cochabamba, Bolivia, 17-year-old Ida, her partner Cecilie, and her sister-in-law Michelle with her young son are detained at the airport with 22 kilograms of cocaine in their luggage and, to their shock, placed in the local women's prison Santa Emilia until further notice. Their close bond is put to the test in the face of harsh prison conditions. Back home in Norway, not only Ida's mother but also the press learn of the young women's detention.

    Money, Money, Money

    After immediate help from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs fails to arrive, it becomes clear that Ida, Cecilie, and Michelle have only one way out of prison: a great deal of money. Money that not all the families of the three women can raise. Differing financial means continue to sow discord within the group. When it comes to individual interrogations, the situation escalates afterward: Ida is placed in solitary confinement after an incident, and when she is allowed back with the others early in the morning, everything has changed fundamentally.

Michelle must make a difficult decision, and Ida realizes she must take matters into her own hands—even before the trial begins. Once the final verdict is handed down, release is out of the question. She asks Antonio, the son of one of her fellow inmates, for help and invites Joakim, a journalist for a Norwegian men's magazine, to come to her in prison and hear her story—in the hope that Norway will come to her aid.

Left alone and in despair, Ida suddenly finds in Joakim her main confidant—in a dual combination of professional journalistic interest and genuine sympathy for the young woman. But soon even he can no longer encourage Ida in her dire state. Out of sheer desperation that Ida might harm herself in custody, Wenke turns to Joakim and Markus in Norway with an impossible request.
