A blazing pyre on the shore of Lake Constance: the plastic surgeon Dr. Julia Spranger was brutally murdered. Doro Beitinger and Chiara Locatelli investigate in their first joint case. The murder investigation leads the detectives to the dead woman's husband, Udo Spranger. The couple was in the middle of a divorce and Udo Spranger was about to move out of their shared villa. The surgeon also seemed to have had problems at her beauty clinic.
At the bottom of Lake Constance, a barrel is discovered containing the body of Charly Lobinger. He disappeared without a trace years ago after winning the lottery. Doro Beitinger and Chiara Locatelli investigate. Charly Lobinger's girlfriend Mona Reichel had reported him missing at the time. She runs a distillery with her sister Linda and lives with her in Charly's villa. The detectives learn that Charly left Mona not only his villa.
A civil servant was beaten to death on the lakeshore, an engineer in her apartment. For Doro Beitinger and Chiara Locatelli, the question arises whether the two murder cases are connected. The investigations among the civil servant's colleagues reveal that Petra Schiller lived far beyond her means. Geraldine Herrenberg, on the other hand, had recently been researching a highly sensitive project and apparently felt she was being followed. Both women attended the same yoga studio.
At a winery, the chief buyer of a discount chain, Urs Stalder, is found dead in the fermentation cellar. Doro Beitinger and Chiara Locatelli soon realize that the winemaking family has something to hide. The detectives find out that the discount chain Urs Stalder worked for is interested in the quality wines of the Mockwitz family. It is strange, however, that the winemakers claim not to know Stalder. Meanwhile, the evidence points increasingly to a homicide.
