About the film
Beyond the tunnel was a mysterious town.
What it’s about
While moving to a new home, Chihiro and her parents stray. Her parents eat food left out and become pigs, prisoners of the witch Yubaba. Alone among spirits, Chihiro must find a way to free them.
What hooks you
Hayao Miyazaki directed this anime, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Rumi Hiiragi voices Chihiro, and Miyu Irino voices Haku. The original title translates as "Sen and the Mysterious Disappearance of Chihiro". A bath scene with a river spirit was inspired by Miyazaki's own experience cleaning a river.
Who it’s for
It will appeal to those who enjoy fantasy worlds rooted in Japanese folklore, stories of a child finding courage under pressure, and animation that balances wonder with darker undercurrents.
