Biography

Japanese animation director, producer, screenwriter, writer, and manga artist. He was born into the family of an aviation factory owner and from childhood became fascinated with drawing manga and animation. In 1964 he met Isao Takahata, with whom he later founded the animation studio Studio Ghibli. For a long time they worked together on many artistic works.

Hayao Miyazaki is the recipient of the 2014 non-competitive honorary Oscar with the following citation of merit — "for exerting a profound influence on world animation, inspiring a whole generation of artists to work in this field and illuminating its boundless potential."

The correct spelling of his surname in characters is 宮﨑, but due to technical limitations the character 﨑 is often replaced with the similar 崎.

Some of his works Miyazaki released under the pseudonyms Saburo Akitsu (Akitsu Saburo) or Terekomu.

    In one interview, when asked "Which directors do you admire?", Hayao Miyazaki replied that he considers Yuri Norstein a wonderful artist. Miyazaki also admits that at a difficult moment for him, when he was seriously wondering whether to continue his career in animation, he was strongly impressed by the Soviet animated film "The Snow Queen" directed by Lev Atamanov, which showed that animated characters can act just like live actors, and that drawn films can move people just like other forms of art.
