Charlie is a Humanzee, born to a chimpanzee mother after the Animal Liberation Alliance freed her from a laboratory. Fifteen years later, he lives with adoptive parents in rural Missouri and enrolls in a regular school, where he befriends the intelligent but withdrawn Lucy. His peaceful life is shattered when the ALA resurfaces, determined to capture him for their own purposes.
