The cast includes Jason Biggs as Jim, Chris Klein as Oz, Thomas Ian Nicholas as Kevin, Eddie Kaye Thomas as Finch, Mena Suvari as Heather, and Tara Reid as Vicky. The film received three MTV Movie Award nominations in 2000: Breakthrough Male Performance, Best Movie, and Best Comedic Performance. The screenplay went through several title changes before settling on "American Pie". The film initially received an NC-17 rating and only got an R after four submissions.

- The role of Heather was originally offered to Alyson Hannigan, but after reading the script, Alyson asked for the role of Michelle.
- When Adam Herz pitched his script to studios, he called it: «An untitled teen comedy that can be made for less than $10 million, and which will probably offend many who read it, but I am sure you will like it.» The script was later renamed «East Great Falls High,» then «Great Falls,» and finally «American Pie.»
