What it’s about
In the Shire, the hobbit Frodo Baggins receives a ring from his uncle Bilbo. The wizard Gandalf reveals that this is the One Ring, forged by the dark lord Sauron, who is now seeking it to regain his dominion over Middle-earth. To prevent this, Frodo must carry the ring to Mount Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed. He sets out with companions, including his loyal friend Sam, and along the way others join them, forming a fellowship to protect the ring-bearer and ensure the ring reaches its destination. The journey takes them from the peaceful Shire toward the desolate lands of Mordor, with Sauron's forces hunting them.

Peter Jackson directs this adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, with Elijah Wood as Frodo and Ian McKellen as Gandalf. The film won four BAFTA awards, including Best Visual Effects and the David Lean Award for Direction, as well as two Academy Awards for cinematography and original score. The production involved extensive rewrites during filming as actors contributed ideas, and composer Howard Shore spent about two years on the music.

- Jake Gyllenhaal auditioned for the role of Frodo.
- The script for each of the three films was largely rewritten during the shooting period due to the numerous suggestions and ideas added to it by various actors.
- The film is based on John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's novel «The Lord of the Rings» (The Lord of the Rings, 1954-1955).
- The management of the film company New Line Cinema insisted on a two-minute prologue, and in the end the introduction stretched to 7.5 minutes.
- Bilbo's party was supposed to have 144 hobbit extras in order to match the text of the book as closely as possible, but in order to save money only 100 were hired.
- In some scenes, Gandalf was voiced by John Astin, the father of actor Sean Astin, who played Sam.
