What it’s about

Bilbo Baggins is content with his uneventful life until Gandalf the Grey arrives with a company of thirteen dwarves. Their leader, Thorin, seeks to return to the Lonely Mountain, from which the dragon Smaug drove his people. Bilbo joins the expedition, and the group heads east through the Wild, where goblins, orcs, wargs, and other threats roam. Deep in goblin tunnels, Bilbo becomes separated from the others and encounters Gollum, a creature who will change his life.

Peter Jackson directs Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Ian McKellen as Gandalf. The production won a Saturn Award for best production design. The film is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novel 'The Hobbit, or There and Back Again'. Its slogan reads: 'From the smallest beginnings come the greatest legends.'

  1. Sylvester McCoy was previously considered for the role of Bilbo Baggins for the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001).
  2. Gandalf's contact lenses are visible in close-ups during the scenes at Bilbo's table.
  3. When Thorin addresses the group at Bilbo Baggins's dining table, the arrangement, color, and texture of the items on the plate (cookies or biscuits) change.
  4. Shortly after the company meets Radagast, they are driven out of the forest and into the tundra, but when the camera then moves around the dwarves, there is no forest at all.
  5. Before the eagles rescue Thorin and company, Thorin's sword lies away from him, too far to reach. When the eagle picks him up, however, the sword is lying on him.
  6. When Bilbo tries to save the ponies from the trolls, real horses are tied by their reins to posts. When the ponies, now created with computer graphics, are then shown, they are not only untied but have no reins at all.
