Kuncen

What it’s about

Awindya, a high-school girl, has not heard from her boyfriend for 24 hours after he climbed Mount Merbabu. She persuades her friends Agnes and Mojo to go with her to the mountain to look for him. At the foot of the mountain they learn that the Kuncen, the spiritual caretaker of the mountain, has died tragically, reportedly due to black magic. They meet Yoga and Diska, who have also lost people close to them on the mountain. Local belief holds that without a Kuncen, the mountain is a place of mystery where supernatural creatures terrorize anyone who enters. The group agrees to search for the new Kuncen in order to find their missing friends.

Jose Poernomo directs a cast that includes Azela Putri as Awindya and Cinta Brian as Yoga. The film draws on Indonesian folklore and the belief that a mountain without its Kuncen becomes a realm of supernatural terror.
