About the film
No *#@!!* Navy’s going to give some poor **!!@* kid eight years in the #@!* brig without me taking him out for the time of his *#@!!* life.
What it’s about
Buddusky and Mulhall, two Navy men, are ordered to deliver 18-year-old Larry Meadows to a Boston prison. The teenager faces eight years for stealing forty dollars from a donation box. Seeing how little life he has experienced, the sailors decide to give him a memorable send-off before he is locked away.
What hooks you
Jack Nicholson plays Buddusky, with Otis Young as Mulhall and Randy Quaid as Meadows. The film won a Silver Award for Best Actor at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival. Hal Ashby directs from Robert Towne's screenplay, based on Darryl Ponicsan's novel. The production aimed for documentary-like authenticity, using natural light and shooting scenes in chronological order.
Who it’s for
It is worth a look for anyone who enjoys character-driven road movies that mix rough humour with unexpected tenderness. It will appeal to those who like stories about military life, male bonding, and the small rebellions that reveal larger truths.

All 9Trivia
- The film is based on Darryl Ponicsan's debut novel "The Last Detail" (The Last Detail, 1970).
- The film was shot in a "gentle" mode, with scenes filmed in chronological order so that inexperienced actors could "get into" the situation. The filmmakers could not find a cinematographer and editor for a long time. The cinematographer was tasked with using natural light in such a way as to achieve the utmost documentary feel of the "picture."
- Because Hal Ashby delayed the editing and also insisted on unusual transitions between scenes, the studio tried to take the footage away from him. The film's release was also delayed due to the abundance of profanity. In order to avoid a restrictive release rating, it was necessary to cut 26 lines containing swear words.
