About the film

Be careful who you wish for…

What it’s about

Bear has been in love with Nikki since their school days but never dared to confess, convinced he is trapped in the friend zone. One day, in an esoteric shop, he discovers a strange trinket: a magic wand that can grant a single wish. He wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone in the world. The wish comes true, and Nikki falls for him, but her affection quickly turns into an all-consuming obsession that grows more disturbing by the day.

What hooks you

Curry Barker writes and directs, with Michael Johnston as Bear and Inde Navarrette as Nikki. Barker's editing approach was to cut as little as possible, removing only insert shots of objects a character looks at, and he deliberately extended a difficult scene to heighten empathy for Nikki. The first kiss was captured in a single take on the first day of shooting. The film's design includes a wand built with a click mechanism inspired by a childhood prank pen, and its silhouette was based on cactus skeletons.

Who it’s for

It will appeal to those who like supernatural horror with psychological depth, where a simple desire leads to escalating dread. It will also suit viewers who enjoy slow-burning tension and stories about the dark side of infatuation.

Director Curry Barker
  1. Director and screenwriter Clive Barker's approach to the film was to cut the bare minimum during editing, while removing all inserts except for shots of objects the character is currently looking at.
  2. The director and screenwriter Curry Barker's desire to shoot long takes created certain difficulties during editing. He had to learn in post-production how to maintain the pace of the story's development.
  3. One of the most difficult scenes to shoot was the scene with Bear's initial wish and Nikki's return to the car. The director and screenwriter Curry Barker deliberately stretched out the scene to make the audience empathize more strongly with Nikki.
  4. During the work on the project, the design and shape of the case in which the magic wand was kept changed several times.
  5. When creating the magic wand, artist Vivian Gray and the prop masters used a prank pen like the one Barker had in childhood. They found a similar pen, took it apart, and inserted the click mechanism into the prop magic wand.
  6. While developing the silhouette of the magic wand, the film's artist Vivian Gray drew inspiration from cactus skeletons.
