Initially, screenwriter Matthew Robinson wrote the script for the pilot episode of a television project called Don't Trust Anyone Under 30 about a student's attempts to get closer to other students. Realizing that he did not have enough material for a TV series, Robinson shifted the script's focus from the student to a man from the future, and over time he ended up with a feature film script. Producer Erwin Stoff offered the script to Gore Verbinski, who liked it, and the script went into production, with Verbinski becoming the director of the project.
