About the film
The ascent that made history.
What it’s about
Tenzing Norgay has climbed for years in the Himalayas, but the highest peak remains out of reach. When a British expedition sets out for Everest in 1953, he wants to be part of it as a full climber, not a porter. The expedition's secretary, Jill Henderson, becomes his ally, and together they press Colonel John Hunt to include him. The climb itself is dangerous, but so is the question of who deserves to stand on top.
What hooks you
Jennifer Peedom directs Tom Hiddleston as Edmund Hillary and Willem Dafoe as Colonel John Hunt, with Caitríona Balfe as Jill Henderson. The film draws on the historical record of the first ascent, focusing on the partnership that made it possible.
Who it’s for
It is worth a look for anyone who likes stories of ambition and fairness set against extreme physical challenges, where the struggle is as much about recognition as it is about survival.
