About the film
Time is the enemy.
What it’s about
In northern France, 6 April 1917, a British general orders Lance Corporal Blake and Lance Corporal Schofield to cross ground apparently abandoned by German troops. They carry a command to call off an offensive by the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. If they fail, 1,600 soldiers, including Blake's brother, will walk into a trap.
What hooks you
Director Sam Mendes builds the mission as a race against time, with the camera following the two men almost without cuts. The film won Oscars for Roger Deakins' cinematography, for visual effects and for sound, plus seven BAFTA awards including Best Film and Best Director. More than one and a half kilometres of trenches were dug for the production, and scenes were rehearsed for six months before shooting began.
Who it’s for
It is a good pick for those who like war stories where the tension comes from a single urgent journey rather than large-scale battle scenes. It will also suit viewers drawn to technically ambitious filmmaking that places them inside the action.
