Lupita Nyong'o admitted that she had been afraid of cats all her life and begged director Michael Sarnoski to use a different animal in the film. But he was adamant, and as a result the actress had to undergo special therapy.

A significant portion of the New York scenes were filmed in London, where a sort of replica of New York's Chinatown was built. The scenes in the New York subway were filmed at closed stations of the London Underground.

Jeff Nichols was expected to direct, but Paramount Pictures preferred to offer him another project.
