- The film's plot is based on the reboot of the popular video game Tomb Raider (2013).
- MGM announced in March 2013 that it had bought the rights to the Tomb Raider game from Paramount. Paramount decided to take this step after the failure of the action-adventure film "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 2 — The Cradle of Life" (Jan de Bont, 2003).
- The new lead actress, Alicia Vikander, was a passionate fan of the Tomb Raider games in her childhood.
- Before the role of Lara Croft went to Alicia Vikander, the main contenders for it were considered to be actresses Daisy Ridley, Emilia Clarke, Saoirse Ronan and Cara Delevingne.
- After the release in 2003 of Jan de Bont's film "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life", the lead actress Angelina Jolie announced publicly that she no longer wanted to play Lara. Alicia Vikander became the second actress to play the role of Lara Croft after Angelina.
- Kathryn Bigelow, Mimi Leder and Catherine Hardwicke were considered as candidates for the film's director.
